My Philosophy

Drumming is fun!  I love playing the drums and creating music and it's been a huge part of my life since I was a child.   I believe in engaging each student's individual creativity and passion immediately.

Music is personal and expressive and every student approaches it from a unique perspective.  That's why I think it is essential to tap into this and to build off what already excites them.  While many teachers might approach lessons as a way to pass on their own identity and taste, I believe it's not about my taste and inspiration, it's about the student's and their unique way of seeing and playing with the world around them.

Everyone comes to music with his or her own goals both big and small.  I believe the roll of the teacher is to make these goals real in a way that opens the student's mind and expands their artistic vision.  In keeping with this, I tailor each lesson to fit the student, focusing on giving them the specific tools for accomplishing their ambitions in the most enjoyable and constructive way possible.

A Message from Vito

Hi! I grew up in a two-teacher household, and before becoming a full-time musician I worked extensively in childhood education as an assistant teacher in elementary schools (Kindergarten, First, and Fifth grade). During that time, I also worked as a math and reading tutor for children ages five through twelve.

Like many drummers of a certain age, my passion was first sparked by Animal on The Muppet Show. Fueled by that same untamed enthusiasm, I started “playing drums” on anything and everything around the house—so much so that my parents quickly agreed to sign me up for lessons.

I loved those lessons, but they were pretty old-school: mostly sitting still and practicing rudiments on a pad. What I really wanted was the blur of energy, the excitement of playing in a band, to channel Animal battling Buddy Rich, and to get inside the Queen and Devo songs I loved on the radio. Instead, I got abstract drills—and eventually, I got bored and quit. It wasn’t until years later that I returned to the drums, always wishing those first lessons had been more creative and engaging, because I know I would have stuck with it.

With over a decade of teaching experience, I still carry the memory of my own early lessons—always making sure to get students behind a real kit from the start and engage their creativity right away. Watching their imaginations spark continues to remind me why I was drawn to both music and education all those years ago. That inspiration is what led me to open my studio, where I bring together my years of recording and touring to teach the skills needed to play on stage, in the studio, and with other musicians.

From the very first lesson, every student will get behind the drums and start making music—learning rudiments and other fundamentals in a fun, practical, and playful way. As they progress, we’ll dig into the nuts and bolts of rock, pop, funk, and dance drumming, while also broadening their understanding of music, production, and performance in ways that prepare them to play with real musicians, in real bands, and in real studios.

In my own life, music taught me discipline and focus, gave me an outlet for my restless energy, and showed me the power of individuals working patiently together to create something greater than themselves. But above all, drumming was—and still is—fun. I love playing and creating music every bit as much as I did when I was a kid, and my goal is to help each student discover that same inspiration and joy in music.
